James, now 28, from Barton-upon-Humber, shares how his diagnosis in 2022 became a turning point, offering clarity amidst personal struggles.
"It was like finding a missing piece of the puzzle," James reveals. "The diagnosis gave me a new sense of self-worth and capability."
After completing his university degree at home during the pandemic, James felt adrift, facing two years of unemployment. But his move to London post-diagnosis opened new doors, leading to a job in employment support with the St Giles Trust.
"London showed me a world of possibilities," James explains. "It made me realize the potential back home."
Returning to his roots in Hull, James joined the Warren Youth Project, where he now supports young people facing diverse challenges, from finding apprenticeships to tackling mental health issues and homelessness.
"Some need guidance on education paths, others on earning an income. We also address mental health, substance abuse, and financial struggles," James shares.
Recent statistics reveal a staggering 948,000 UK individuals aged 16-24 are not in education, employment, or training. James emphasizes the need for sustained government funding to address these complex barriers.
"Support and understanding are crucial," he adds. "We must invest in our youth's future."
A government spokesperson acknowledges the scale of the issue, stating, "Nearly a million young lives are at stake. We can't afford to let them down."
The Youth Guarantee promises a job for those out of work or education for 18 months, with partnerships and innovative support strategies in the works.
